The first course at the resort, Bandon Dunes, opened on May 19, 1999. Bandon Dunes was designed by Scotsman David McLay Kidd, and it instantly garnered high praise. The course was one of Kidd’s early efforts in designing a golf course. Since opening, the original golf course on property has been adjusted. Alterations include significant amounts of gorse removal and a rerouting of the par 3, second hole. Bandon Dunes is traditionally home to resort guest’s lowest scores, thanks to its forgiving landing areas off the tee and mildly to moderately undulated green complexes.

Course Description

Golf was born on rugged, wind-swept land just like this. Every hole, every hazard, every shot is defined by nature’s infinite presence. As the elements change, so does the game. It’s all part of the tradition of links golf. Lies are tight and conditions are lean. Bounce and roll are a better measure of quality than color. Mastery of the ground game becomes a more important skill than raw power. The ingenious and inventive player is rewarded with multiple options on nearly every shot. These days it appears like a proposition destined for success—take Chicago businessman Mike Keiser, hot off his success with Bandon Dunes, and pair him with wunderkind Tom Doak, a brilliant golf architect with an encyclopedic knowledge of practically every course ever built. Time has proven that Keiser and Doak did indeed find the magical formula. Pacific Dunes is ranked 24th in the world by Golf Magazine, and 18th in the U.S. by Golf Digest, and helped establish Bandon Dunes as a must-visit resort, as well as paved the way for the courses that followed.

Course Description

Designed by Tom Doak and opened in 2001, Pacific Dunes is remarkably different in character and shot-making requirements than our other courses. Pacific Dunes doesn’t feel like it was built as much as it was discovered. Rippling fairways remain just as they were found and natural bunkers line the landscape as they have for centuries. The course emerges from shore pines to spectacular 60-foot sand dunes. When the wind blows, precise approach shots are a necessity. Pacific Dunes is short enough to give you hope but rugged enough to test every facet of your game.

Course Description

When Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw began working in the sand to uncover our third course, they faced the challenge of following Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes. Opened in 2005, Bandon Trails begins atop a massive sand dune, then quickly opens into a sprawling meadow. The routing then works higher into the coastal forest, before finally returning to finish in the dunes. The course is enjoyable to walk and is a constant reminder of how the game was originally created among inland rolling dunes with dramatic ocean vistas.

The primary goal at Old Macdonald was to create a series of arresting holes that fit the land and that people will enjoy playing. If they become inspired to delve into the subject of golf course architecture, all the better but, as with the other three courses at Bandon, it is all about the quality of the golf and the shots that you are going to be asked to hit/invent.

Course Description

The fourth course at Bandon Dunes pays homage to golf course architect Charles Blair Macdonald by asking one simple question: What would Macdonald have created had the Oregon Coast been his canvas? Inspired by Macdonald’s iconic work, course architects Tom Doak and Jim Urbina crafted a course that seeks the answer upon vast greens, among myriad angles of play, and from the depths of fierce bunkers. By celebrating these classic concepts of design, we honor the traditions of this game we love.

Renovated by the world-class design team of Coore & Crenshaw and co-founded by Phil Friedmann and Mike Keiser, the Sheep Ranch was for many years a mysterious golf landscape just north of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. Now with one mile of ocean frontage, nine green sites right along the edge of the continent, and stunning Pacific Ocean views on every hole, Sheep Ranch continues the legacy of “Golf As It Was Meant to Be” on the Pacific Coast.

Course Description

Sheep Ranch sits on about 140 acres north of the resort’s Old Macdonald course, and for the past 16 or so years, there were 13 unirrigated greens played by a very small group of golfers. Fire trucks watered the turf, where Tom Doak and Jim Urbina did initial construction after they built Pacific Dunes. Mike Keiser, owner of Bandon Dunes among his other highly popular golf resorts, bought this land in 2000 with his business partner Phil Friedmann for $4 million in cash. Doak had designed these 13 greens with crisscrossing fairways accompanying them, allowing golfers to play into them from various directions.

A unique experience in every way, Bandon Preserve is a 13-hole par-3 course that delivers a level of enjoyment matched only by the spectacular views. Opened in 2012 and designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, Bandon Preserve begins high atop a sand dune and rolls down toward the beach. The Pacific Ocean provides the backdrop to every hole and the course’s mission through the support of the Wild Rivers Coast Alliance is to promote a region where healthy ecosystems drive a vibrant economy.

Course Description

The course is extremely fun and challenging. Golfers can be creative with their shots, choosing multiple lines of attack to landing areas that funnel the shot to the desired location. Flying shots to the pin is possible if the golfer can generate a lot of spin. Like most links style greens, Preserve’s greens are hard and only shots with a lot of spin will stick. The vibe at the Preserve is quick, fun, casual golf. Emphasis on fun.

As a walking-only golf resort, our goal is to enhance your experience through the utilization of caddies. Caddies come to Bandon Dunes with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Some are professional caddies from other resorts, private clubs, and professional tours. We also have an extensive training program for those who wish to start a new career as a caddie. Additionally, we support the Evans Scholarship program and many of our caddies are Evans Scholars. As Thomas Dunne with Travel and Leisure Magazine wrote, “The Bandon Dunes caddie program should be the blueprint for American resort golf.”
